Bob Cross provides mentoring and business direction to a number of companies that, under the rules of a Business Support Program through the Institute for Independent Business, are subject to a stringent Confidentiality Agreement.
Within the following case studies not subject to severe confidentiality, there is an underlying theme of solving very difficult and complex issues, with great success at regenerating projects or achieving excellent conclusions.
Australian Information Industry Association – Strategic Plan
Based on existing documentation and a facilitated workshop, Bob Cross developed a strategic plan for the WA executive of the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA). The outcome was a change in priorities to further raise the profile in WA.

Australian Information Industry Association – CollabIT Action Plan
The CollabIT program is an initiative of the AIIA to provide networking, partnering, lobbying and other services to members and to the wider ICT community. Bob Cross developed a detailed action plan by undertaking many interviews, running workshops and facilitating focus groups.  Core issues were filtered out and a single critical factor identified.

The outcome was a report that is now being used to seek funding from within AIIA, the Australian government and the West Australian government.

City of FremantleStrategy for City Planning Information Systems
With the introduction of a new City Plan Scheme, Bob Cross facilitated workshops that lead to an understanding of the process by which Information & Technology supports the City Plan Scheme.

The outcome was the development of an Information Systems Plan to support the Scheme.

City of Fremantle Precincts - Strategic Plans
With the introduction of Precincts within Fremantle, Bob Cross facilitated the development of a Strategic Plan for Precinct 5.  With an understanding of conditions and issues, processes were derived to enable the Precinct to succeed. Following recommendations from Precinct 5, he facilitated the development of a similar Strategic Plan for Precinct 4.

As a result, these precincts are able to manage their activities that maximises their exposure and integration with Council.

Clough – Resolve MIS problem issues
The company was implementing a knowledge management project that was beset by contradictory requirements and stalled for a considerable time. Bob Cross facilitated two workshops that assisted stakeholders in understanding problems and in developing broad processes.

The workshops provided a clear understanding of required and agreed processes that enabled the project to be successfully restarted.

Computer Sciences Corp of Australia
Western Region Business Plan
As a member of the executive team, Dr Cross facilitated a multi-day executive workshop to derive a Business Plan, enabling new management to understand business opportunities in Western Australia,

This plan was followed to expand CSC activities in WA.

Strategic Plan
As an external consultant, Bob Cross was engaged to develop a Strategic Plan for CSC in WA three years after the Business Plan. Again, he facilitated a workshop that drew out the issues. The Plan provided clarity to drive expansion of CSC business activities in WA.

Conflict resolution
Some conflict existed between CSC and teaching hospitals over agreement of an implementation approach and the sequence of hospital implementation. As an external consultant, Bob Cross was accepted as an independent facilitator to resolve these issues.

As a result, issues were resolved and implementation of hardware and software through the teaching hospitals was successfully completed.

Department for Community Development
Risk Management
Bob Cross conducted a study that determined six major risks and then developed strategies either to mitigate risks or be covered by a contingency plan. This ensured the successful implementation of a large project.

Project Management
Bob Cross provided project management in the latter part of the development of an extensive information system for use by front-line staff that was significantly over budget and over time by some years.

As a result, the project was successfully completed within the financial year.

Software costing to establish asset
Bob Cross calculated a replacement cost for a system where neither actual cost nor market cost could be determined.

Department of Industry and Resources
Industry Focus Groups
Input was desired from the WA ICT industry on perceptions, beliefs and views. Bob Cross facilitated ICT Industry Clustering focus group workshops and conducted interviews to provide the department with input from industry and established what criteria WA based ICT companies take into consideration, particularly given their experiences in the early start up and commercialisation phases, when making decisions regarding location.

The outcome was a report that was presented to the Minister and is now being incorporated into future departmental policy.

Research Capability
A compilation of ICT research capability was required for a major audit of the ICT industry within WA. Bob Cross conducted a scan and the outcome was identification of the broad base of research taking place within research institutions and by industry, including a very high level of quality ICT research.

Edith Cowan University
Computer Vision
The Department of Computer Science understood the necessity of developing a vision and a plan to succeed as a department. Bob Cross facilitated workshops to derive a vision for the Department accepted by all, together with strategies and an action plan. Similar processes were held over the following two years. These plans provided an important direction for the growth of the Department.

Strategic Plan
A Strategic Plan was required from the Department of Computer Science, which Bob Cross developed from the Computer Vision series. This consolidated ownership of processes within the Department and informed senior university management of the successful direction undertaken by the Department.

Strategic Plan
Following a major reorganisation, a Strategic Plan was required for the School of Computer and Information Science – an amalgamation of several schools. Bob Cross facilitated workshops to develop a strategic plan from first principles.

This plan was followed to significantly expand the School.
